What Is Excellence?

Have you ever wondered what constitutes excellence?

What exactly is excellence?

There are many-many answers to this question but I do love the practical simplicity of Ben Bergeron’s definition from his book Chasing Excellence, which is nothing less than great.

In the book we read…
“Excellence is maximising everything you have in the categories that matter to your long-term goals.
The categories that matter are different in each craft; for athletes, those categories are training, nutrition, sleep, recovery, and mindset.
If you’re a brain surgeon or a CEO,your categories may be different.
No matter what your craft is, there’s a question you should continually ask yourself:

This is a great question…

Am I committing everything I have to make myself the tiniest percentage better than I am right now, no matter how hard I have to work, no matter what I have to give up, no matter how long it takes?”

So the take away of this episode is this.

If you are chasing excellence, find out what are the most important categories that matter in your craft. Form long-term goals with respect on those categories, and then maximise everything in those categories.

Simple, right?
